Littleton School Board 2-19 meeting
Lakeway Student brings SAU Board on an “Expedition”.
On Monday, with the help of Christopher Rexford and Amy Kopp, the SAU #84 School Board was given a glimpse of a new learning platform available through Google known as “Expeditions”. Google Expeditions is an augmented reality system that allows educators, and their classrooms, to go on virtual tours of different global locations. At first glimpse the headset device is like a “view-master” toy. However, the devices link to a tablet device which runs a virtual slide show for the users. The slides allow users to view in a virtual environment the images and settings controlled by the host device. With a list price ranging from $3,300 – $8,300, based on class size, the expeditions kits are a fully capable, virtual field trip package.
Lakeway Elementary student Christopher Rexford and Librarian/Technology Integrator Amy Kopp gave an immersive presentation to those in attendance at the meeting through the use of VR headsets and a guided tour of various locations run by a connected tablet device. The Expeditions platform runs on both Apple and Android devices. There are close to 500 guided tours of various locations around the world available now. Additional expeditions are currently being developed. The Expeditions’ website boasts that users can “swim with sharks, visit outer space, walk through a museum, and more without leaving the classroom.”
