Rocks Estate shares bear presentation this Wednesday
Ben Kilham presents “The Social Black Bear: What Bears Have Taught Me about Being Human”
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Ammonoosuc Chapter of NH Audubon will host noted wildlife biologist Ben Kilham for a presentation about black bears at The Rocks this Wednesday, February 21 at 7 p.m.
A renowned black bear researcher and Lyme, N.H., resident, Kilham has shared his knowledge about bears with more than 40,000 people through his lectures. His new slide show is based on the social relationships within the black bear society.
Kilham has a wildlife management degree from the University of New Hampshire. He also holds his PhD in Environmental Science from Drexel University. Ben gained the bear knowledge first hand by raising and observing dozens of black bears; bears orphaned by their mother. In the spring of 1992, Kilham found himself parenting a pair of orphaned, emaciated, four-pound bear cubs. Eventually the experience led to him parenting over 40 cubs. He raised them and then released them into the wild. In addition, He uses the opportunity to research and observe the life cycle of the black bear.
Ben’s literature and workshops
His first book published about these experiences is titled “Among the Bears: Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild” . It was published in 2002. Ben also has a second book; “Out on a Limb: Origins of Intuition and Intelligence” which was published in 2013.
By thinking more from the bear’s perspective, Kilham has designed several workshops. These classes provide wildlife managers with tools to disarm threatening bear behavior, without destroying bears. Kilham is featured in National Geographic television specials and articles from The New York Times, People Magazine and The Boston Globe. He has also been on the “Today Show,” “Dateline NBC,” “CBS Coast to Coast,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,”.
The free program starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday February 21. For more information and a calendar of events, please visit www.therocks.org, call 603-444-6228, or email info@therocks.org.
