LRH Library Receives Grant
Grant for NIH’s All of Us Research Program
The Littleton Regional Healthcare Gale Medical Library recently received funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-New England Region (NN/LM-NER). The NN/LM-NER is located at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, MA. It is the regional branch of the National Library of Medicine, one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant is projected to support public libraries in meeting their patrons’ health information needs. It will also engage communities in All of Us.
NIH
The NIH is recruiting one million or more people from all over the country to gather data that will speed up research and improve the health of our population. As of March 15, 2019, more than 195,000 people are signed up. The program will consider each participant’s differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology. To be successful, the NIH wants to recruit people from both rural and urban areas. Researchers want to discover paths toward delivering precision medicine.
Precision Medicine refers to a type of medical treatment that will work based on one’s individual traits. It’s a new approach to disease prevention and treatment. A well-known example of precision medicine is a types of treatment for people who do not have breast cancer, but carry a breast cancer gene. This means they have a greater chance of getting breast cancer. Talking with a physician can present the patient with options that lessen or remove the risk of getting breast cancer.
Gale Medical Library’s librarian, Anne Conner, is visiting librarians at North Country public libraries. She is spreading the word about the All of Us project, and offering health information programs for library patrons.
All of Us
As a participant in the All of Us program, Anne is able to describe what it takes to join in the biggest NIH research project ever. The NIH expects the entire project to take about 10 years. In addition to lifestyle and health history surveys, the project will perform gene analysis on a sample from each person who enrolls. To learn more about this program, visithttp://nnlm.gov/all-of-us.
